How to identify this issue:
You may notice rippling across the surface, corners bulging, or even canvas separating from the stretcher. Raking light from above or from the side may cast broad shadows.
Why it matters:
Buckling can indicate a problem with tensioning or a failure in the attachment of the canvas, warping in the stretcher, or a poor surrounding environment. It not only distorts the visual presentation, but can lead to cracking and flaking paint layers or long-term structural issues.
How we help:
We assess the cause of the deformation in order to determine the appropriate response. This may involve humidity treatments to flatten the canvas, stretcher adjustments or replacement, and protective measures against fluctuations in the environment.
What to expect:
It will be necessary to examine the outer edges, which may require unframing the painting. If deformations are old, the canvas may retain a slight memory of the shape after treatment. If it is not possible to address the cause of the problem then deformations flattened with humidity treatments may eventually return.
If cracking or loss has occurred in the paint layer, a separate treatment step may be necessary to reattach loose material.
We don’t automatically aim for a completely flat canvas; older paintings may have a subtle ‘drape’ that is consistent with age. We can consult on what is a problem and what is not, and will tell you what results you can expect from a suggested treatment.
